Surface Dynamics Group
The activities of the Surface Dynamics Group within the "Magnetic and acoustic resonances" Section of the Institute for Solid State Research (IFF) are mainly concerned with surface-guided and related acoustic waves.
The work of the group is characterized both by fundamental and applied research and by intensive co-operation with industrial enterprises.
The group is active in the following fields of interest:
- Characterization of solid state surfaces and layered structures in relation to their elastic, dielectric, piezoelectric, ferroelectric and ferroelastic properties
- Experimental investigations of the excitation and propagation properties of Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW)
- Search for new acoustic modes guided by surfaces and interfaces and related phenomena
- Development of new design principles for SAW devices and their physical modelling in co-operation with industrial enterprises
- Development and characterization of new materials for SAW devices
- Acoustic sensors (e.g. Monitoring blood coagulation)
- Equipment for measuring SAW propagation velocity dispersion (SAW excitation by laser pulses, therefore also suitable for non-piezoelectric materials)
- Two Laser probes for measuring SAW fields and velocities and absolute SAW amplitudes, respectively
- Computer software for calculating acoustic modes in layered halfspaces and plates (generally piezoelectric, with any desired degree of anisotropy and in contact with liquids or gases)
- Physical models and computer software for analysis of SAW devices, in particular of resonator filters
- Devices for measuring the four-pole parameters of, for instance, SAW filters
- Low-temperature cryostat, suitable also for high-frequency measurements
In order to gain insight into these areas, the Surface Dynamics Group possesses the following
experimental and computational resources:
