Preparation of ordered fullerene layers

Highly ordered C60 layers can be prepared on HOPG (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite) by thermal evaporation (PVD). Grains up to 50 μm in lateral size are formed during the heteroepitaxial deposition on HOPG under optimum conditions (e.g. heated substrates). On top of the grain, molecularly flat terraces can be observed:

(each peak corresponds to a C60 molecule)

The morphology of ordered fullerene thin films can be changed and controlled by electrochemical reduction in aqueous solution or in ionic liquids.
