Production of fullerenes
Production of fullerenes
Production by DC-arc discharge
For the production of fullerenes a generator on the basis of the Krätschmer-Huffman method is used. By using this method graphite rods will be evaporated in an arc discharge.
| Scheme of the Krätschmer-Huffmann fullerene generator |
Optimized parameters: current intensity (175 A), direct current, heliumpressure (200 Torr) and geometry of the arc discharge shown in the figure.
| More details to the equipment here |
During the burning the distance between the rods in the generator should by very small. The temperature and the pressure in the chamber should be constant.
After burning the collected soot will be extracted in a Soxhlet extractor with CS2 for 20 hours.
Ion implantation
Fullerenes can be modified by ion bombardment, too.
The system consits of a sublimation unit, an arc discharge ion source and a cooled target.
