Undercooled Melts

webpage2007.jpg

Melt undercooling is a great issue for the fundamental studies of  non-equilibrium solidification processes with the high potential of  formation of solids of metastable nature

Aims

In situ analysis of rapid solidification processes of undercooled melts

Preparation of metastable alloys and intermetallic compounds

Quenching from undercooled state to obtain novel microstructures

Alloys studied

Magnetic alloys and steel: Fe-Cr-Ni, Fe-Ni, Fe-Co

Eutectic alloys: Nb-Al, Nb-Ni, Ni-Si

Peritectic alloys: Co-Si, Co-Al

Superconductors: YNi2B2C, PdNi2B2C

Intermetallics: Ti-Al-Nb, Ni-Al

Methods

Electromagnetic levitation technique

Containerless processing

High purity conditions

Deep undercooling level

Contactless temperature measurements
