Surface Acoustic Wave based Fluid Atomization

SAW-based fluid atomization using a surface-mounted microchannel

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) actuators can generate aerosols with an adjustable droplet diameter in the range of 1 to 100 µm by pressure wave excitation in fluids. Such devices could find their application in medical inhalators or other fields of microdroplet aerosol technology, an outlook being even more promising considering the high potential of SAW regarding miniaturization and integration, e.g. in terms of hand-held devices. We investigate both, the underlying physics of aerosol generation out of thin fluid films and new principles for the technological realization of SAW-based fluid atomizer devices.
