Corrosion Behaviour of RE-TM Permanent Magnets
High performance permanent magnets on rare earth –transition metal (RE-TM) base have found a wide-spread application as key components in modern electronic devices and medical or automobile equipment. NdFeB magnets dominate due to their very high maximum energy density (BH)max at room temperature, while SmCo magnets exhibit excellent high temperature properties. (link to O.G. Permanent Magnetic Materials). However, in contrast to their excellent magnetic performance the corrosion resistance of RE-TM magnets is rather low in many environments despite various coating measures, which can strongly limit their application potential.
