Scientist in Charge: Dr. Roberto Penco

http://www.as-g.it/

Expertise and experience

Ansaldo has been involved since about 1970 in the design, manufacturing and test of large scale resistive and superconducting magnets, superconducting resonant cavities, cryogenic components and special products for high energy physics, controlled thermonuclear fusion and medical applications. Its turnover is about 25 M€ per year. ASG is currently working with CERN (CH) for LHC superconducting dipoles and quadrupoles supply, and with IPP (D) for W7X Stellarator coils supply. Among ASG customers there are the main European laboratories. In addition ASG is developing a new MRI 0.5 T system using a new MgB2 superconductor, in a team with Columbus Superconductor and Paramed companies. At present the staff is composed of 180 people and 22 of them are in the engineering department (design bureau, R&D dept and cryogenic laboratory). Designers currently employ state of the art design tools as general purpose FEA computer codes, 3D CAD systems, in-house developed codes for electromagnetic, cryogenics and applied superconductivity computations.

Role in the project

ASG will be mainly involved in the application of nano-engineered HTSC and MgB2 materials in small magnets. They will also provide the ToK on aspects of HTS based magnet system within in the framework of NESPA.

Key personnel

Dr. R. Penco will lead the NESPA project activities, with the cooperation of Dr. Roberto Marabotto (senior engineer) and Dr. Marco Modica (junior engineer) for the magnet winding and testing. Dr. Davide Nardelli with contribute in testing short lengths of conductor.
