Identification of pinning centres using high-resolution TEM

Abstract: This task will be devoted to the nano-structural characterisation of the samples prepared in WP1. The objective is to identify the size and structure of the second phase particles introduced in the superconducting material as well as to investigate the occurrence of other defects induced by the nano-scaled objects or by the growth process itself (ICMAB).

The results will be closely correlated with the electrical characterisation done in KT2.3 since only in this way an identification of the effective flux pinning centres will be possible enabling a unique feedback for the sample preparation. Within this context, the planned TEM training and ToK activity of ICMAB will spread the required knowledge on high quality TEM preparation among other groups that have advanced characterisation facilities, so that detailed investigations of the different samples using high-resolution TEM will be possible.
