Pinning mechanisms in YBCO films with nanoscaled secondary phases (Ph.D. topic)

The recent progress in coated conductor (CC) technology aims to make large quantities of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) films on strong metallic substrates available for a wide range of applications from low magnetic field, high temperature motors and generators to low temperature high-field magnets at the leading edge of research (e.g. fusion demo-projects ITER, DEMO and particle accelerators like LHC). Nano-engineering size, density and distribution of a pinning-active secondary phase improves the performance of the superconducting film in magnetic fields at different working conditions. I prepare thick (~1.6 µm) and very thick (up to 10 µm, increasing the critical current Ic = Jct by the film thickness t) superconducting YBCO films by pulsed laser deposition on different different state-of-the-art coated conductor templates (Ni-W RABiTS, IBAD-YSZ-buffered stainless steel tape, ISD-MgO on Hastelloy) and investigate the structural and electrical transport properties of those layers by means of several characterization techniques from electron microscopy and X-Ray diffraction to transport current measurements. The incorporation of pinning-active secondary phases is achieved in situ by the use of premixed targets with additions of BaHfO3 (BHO) and the mixed double perovskite Ba2Y(Nb/Ta)O6 (BYNTO). Tuning the deposition parameters (temperature, growth rate, atmosphere, and particle energy) controls the microstructure and thereby the pinning landscape. As a result, BHO and BYNTO can be grown in correlated structures parallel to the YBCO c-axis (nanocolumns), increasing the performance for applied magnetic fields in that direction, as well as planar particles parallel the YBCO ab-plane, depending on the amount of secondary phase and the deposition conditions and recently shown the vicinal angle of the substrate. BYNTO-doped films on single-crystals showed pinning forces amongst the highest values reported so far at liquid nitrogen temperature in self-field.
