The Joint Science Conference deals with all questions of research funding, science and research policy strategies and the science system which jointly affect the Federal Government and the Länder. It negotiates and implements the joint federal-state funding of science enshrined in the German Constitutional Law. Within the framework of the GWK, the ministers of science and finance of the federal and state governments agree on joint programs for the promotion of science at universities and non-university research institutions. GWK's deliberations and decisions are prepared by the committee, which has also been given a set of tasks to finalize. The GWK committee consists of the department heads of ministries of science and finance ministers of the federal and state governments.
The tasks of the GWK also include the resolutions on joint funding of Leibniz institutes as a result of the regular evaluations. In this context, the GWK decides every seven years also on the IFW. The upcoming GWK committee meeting is therefore a good opportunity for IFW Dresden to present itself as a living and successful research institute.
