Our ongoing research activities permanently generate interesting and challenging research topics that can be at the basis of a PhD project. PhD positions are for 36 months. The prerequisite for starting a PhD is a an excellent academic track-record and an interest in theoretical condensed matter physics. Candidates for a PhD position generally have a background in theoretical physics.

Those interested in a PhD position in a particular research field of the Institute for Theoretical Solid State Physics are invited to contact Prof. Dr. Jeroen van den Brink or the group leader working in that field. 

In the following fields PhD positions are regularly available

• Topological Matter (Fulga, Van den Brink) -- Exploring new types of topological systems, including topological insulators and superconductors, but also gapless systems such as Weyl semimetals. Part of the focus will be on determining the stability of topological phases to perturbations such as disorder, as well as studying their dynamical properties.
• Strongly Interacting Topological Systems (Nogueira, Van den Brink) -- Determining physical properties, novel magnetic, orbital and topological ground states of systems with simultaneously strong spin-orbit interactions and substantial electronic correlations.
• Quantum Chemistry of Strongly Correlated Materials (Hozoi, van den Brink) -- Developing and applying quantum chemistry methods for correlated electron systems, with an emphasis on magnetic transition metal compounds and the effects of spin-orbit coupling - e.g., iridates and cuprates.
