Kornelius Nielsch appointed Honorary Member in Moldova

The Academy of Sciences of Moldova honours Prof. Kornelius Nielsch for his scientific achievements and long-standing research cooperation.

Prof. Dr. Kornelius Nielsch, Director of the Institute for Metallic Materials at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden), has been appointed an Honorary Member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (Academia de Științe a Moldovei, AȘM). The honorary distinction was presented to him on 25 June 2026 during the international summer school The Path to Scientific Discoveries in Chișinău.

As an invited speaker, Prof. Nielsch delivered the lecture "Conversion of Heat into Electricity Using Sustainable Thermoelectric Materials." The summer school brought together internationally renowned researchers with school pupils and university students. The program also featured Nobel Laureates Prof. Richard J. Roberts (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 1993) and Prof. Hiroshi Amano (Nobel Prize in Physics, 2014). During the event, Prof. Nielsch received the Academy's honorary membership in recognition of his scientific achievements and his contribution to international research cooperation.

"Being appointed an Honorary Member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova is a great scientific honour for me. At the same time, I see this distinction as a recognition of our long-standing scientific cooperation with our colleagues in the Republic of Moldova. For more than 15 years, we have been working with Prof. Ion Tiginyanu and his team on innovative research topics. This collaboration has resulted in numerous publications as well as the BMFTR-funded collaborative research projects DEHYCONA and ALDMOLD. This continuous exchange strengthens our scientific cooperation while supporting the integration of research institutions in the Republic of Moldova into the European Research Area."

Prof. Nielsch's honorary membership further reflects the close and long-standing scientific links between IFW Dresden and research institutions in the Republic of Moldova. Since 2007, IFW scientist Prof. Dr. Vladimir Fomin has also been an Honorary Member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.
