New Joint Professorship for Applied Research Technology

Danny Baumann assumes Professorship for Applied Research Technology at the University of Applied Sciences Dresden

The Leibniz-Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IFW Dresden) is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Danny Baumann to the Professorship for Applied Research Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of University of Applied Sciences Dresden (HTW Dresden).

This appointment represents the first joint professorship in Saxony between a non-university research institution and a university of applied sciences—a pioneering initiative explicitly supported by the Free State of Saxony. The professorship is combined with the leadership of the Research Technology Division at IFW Dresden and connects research, technological development, and teaching. The aim of this joint appointment is to strengthen both the training of highly qualified professionals and the transfer of new technologies into industrial applications.

A Bridge Between Research and Application

With around 50 employees, the Research Technology Division is a core element of IFW Dresden’s research infrastructure. It develops and operates advanced instrumentation and technical solutions for key technologies such as hydrogen technology, vacuum and cryogenic systems.

The professorship serves as a strategic interface between IFW Dresden’s cutting-edge research and the practice-oriented teaching at HTW Dresden, which maintains close partnerships with numerous industrial companies. This structure creates new momentum for innovation projects and application-driven research in the region.

Prof. Baumann studied physical engineering at the Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau, conducted research at IFW Dresden in the field of magnetic and superconducting materials, and earned his doctorate at the Technical University Dresden. He brings extensive experience in scientific instrumentation and international technology projects to his new role.

Strengthening Saxony as a Center of Innovation

With this first joint professorship, IFW Dresden, HTW Dresden, and the Free State of Saxony are sending a clear signal for closer collaboration between research, teaching, and industrial application. This innovative appointment model opens up new pathways for hands-on education, enhances the transfer of scientific knowledge to society, and strengthens both the future viability of Saxony as an innovation hub and the education of skilled professionals in key fields of materials research.
