Kick-off meeting for project BioPoly-E² in Freiberg

Biogenic approach for electrochemical energy storage

On 27 November 2025, the first project meeting of the newly launched initiative “Biopolymers as Components for Electrochemical Energy Storage (BioPoly-E²)” took place in Freiberg. Representatives of the three project partners IFW Dresden, TU Dresden (TUD) and FILK Freiberg met to discuss initial results from the start-up phase and to coordinate the next steps for the coming months.

BioPoly-E² aims to develop aqueous symmetric electric double-layer capacitors (supercapacitors) based on a fully bio-based material approach. The focus lies on using biopolymers as functional components for safe and sustainable electrochemical energy storage devices. Collagen will be employed as a hydrogel to widen the electrochemical stability window of aqueous systems. In parallel, cellulose derivatives as well as cellulose–collagen composites will be used to produce nitrogen-doped carbon-based electrode materials.

At the end of the project, a demonstrator is to be presented that achieves a high energy density while containing a substantial share of bio-based components. With this approach, BioPoly-E² contributes to environmentally friendly energy storage solutions and strengthens the Saxon research landscape in the field of sustainable functional materials.

The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF/EFRE) and the Saxon Development Bank (SAB).
