Dr. Simon Pauly was awarded the Masing Memorial Prize 2018 of the German Society for Materials Research (DGM). This acknowledges his work on metastable alloys. These range from material-specific research topics such as metallic glasses, shape memory alloys, vacuum brazing alloys and biomaterials up to applications and technological innovations e.g. in additive manufacturing.
Additive manufacturing is a key technology. Similar to 3D printing, this technology allows for producing components with complex and filigree geometries. Moreover, it is able to influence and manipulate specific material properties. This requires a profound understanding of the relationships between process control, material structure and material properties. This is the core of Simon Pauly's research.
Since 1957, the DGM has awarded the Masing Memorial Prize once a year for outstanding work to a young, doctoral researcher. In particular, works that cover both basic and applied materials science issues are honored.
