More quantum physics in Saxony's curriculum

Teacher training in quantum physics on 1/2 October at IFW Dresden

With the start of the new school year, the revised learning unit “Quantum objects” is a relevant part for the A-level physics examination. This is not only new for the students, but also for the teachers.

Two years ago, the quantum physics learning unit of the Saxon physics curriculum for grammar schools was modernized. Since the current school year, the revised content is now a compulsury part of physics lessons in the upper secondary school and relevant for the Abitur examination.
However, in order for the new content to be implemented in lessons and become an integral part of young people's general education, dedicated teachers and further training opportunities are needed. For this reason, the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden), together with the Chair of Physics Didactics at the Technical University of Dresden, has launched a teacher training course, which is now taking place for the first time at the IFW Dresden.

“We hope that this will help teachers to better understand quantum physics on the basis of current research and thus be able to teach it in a more tangible way. We are aware that this fundamental theory with its laws - which often contradict our classical understanding of the laws of nature and our everyday experience - is not an easy chapter to understand. This makes our intention to make a useful contribution to education all the more urgent,” says Scientific Director Prof. Bernd Büchner.

The teacher training course will take place on 1 and 2 October at the IFW Dresden. The training is supported by the State Office for Schools and Education, the Technical University of Dresden, the German Physical Society and the Heraeus Foundation.
The training serves to classify the new curriculum content for the learning unit “Quantum Objects” and to support teachers in Saxony (and other federal states if interested).
In addition to subject-specific and didactic impulses and laboratory visits, concrete teaching suggestions and materials are also presented that can be used directly in the current school year. The materials were developed as part of scientific work at the TU Dresden and the IFW Dresden.
