The first light

Junior research group at IFW Dresden develops a new instrument for research on quantum materials and reaches a milestone

Two years ago, Dr. Aliaksei Charnukha and an Emmy Noether junior research group started investigating quantum materials using terahertz near-field microscopy at low temperatures.

With the development of a novel research apparatus the group has reached a milestone on the path towards the exploration of quantum materials on the nanoscale: thanks to the outstanding implementation by the IFW Research Technology department the newly designed instrument shines the first beautiful light into the "nano world".

The purpose of the five-year research program is to impart extremely high spatial resolution to conventional optical spectroscopy. This will allow the investigation of unique material properties that are driven by strong quantum effects and quasi-particle interactions on the nanoscale, yet generate useful macroscopic functionalities. For a technological application of quantum materials, a fundamental understanding of the formation and dynamics as well as the interaction of different collectively ordered phases is required. To advance research in this field, Aliaksei Charnukha and his group are developing novel instrumentation that will enable experiments in strong magnetic fields and at low temperatures down to 1.6 Kelvin.

The junior researcher has over 2 million euros at his disposal to advance his work in the field of strongly correlated electron systems.
