Rudolf Schäfer studied Materials Science and received his Ph.D. in Engineering at Erlangen-University in 1990. After Postdoc stays at IBM Research in Yorktown Heights and Forschungszentrum Jülich he moved to IFW Dresden in 1993 where he became head of the department Magnetic Microstructures in 2002. For about 15 years he acted as Ombudsperson of the IFW. In 2011, R. Schäfer was appointed adjunct professor for Magnetic Materials at TU Dresden. He became Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Magnetics Society in 2013 and currently chairs the Conference Executive Committee of the Society. His interest areas span magnetic materials with focus on magnetic microstructures. He has published more than 200 technical articles in peer-reviewed journals, including several book chapters and 2 monographs.
